- Although largely credited and acknowledged as Beach & Arthur, Inc., of Indianapolis, Indiana, these coved luncheon plates were designed and manufactured by the C.A. Reed Company of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They first appeared in C.A. Reed’s 1933 Dealer catalog. Highly ranked among my all-time favorite Reed designs, the similarities in style and technique are easily mistaken for Beach & Arthur. The imagery is exquisite and the symmetry is on par. Notwithstanding the misidentification, this design is equal in importance and quality and should continue to be valued as such.

- Large size table cover, USA, C.A. Reed Company, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, 1933-1936, first appeared in their 1933 Dealer catalog, 61” x 84” (opened), no design named (early Reed output was not assigned a design/pattern). This was sold with stock number 8411-H.
- Made for one season only in 1936, C.A. Reed designed and marketed these luncheon napkins, including an array of matching luncheon sets and table covers, to coordinate with their reissued 1933 witch trio design. The arched-back black cat imagery is nearly identical to that in each corner of the witch trio napkin. This updated napkin complements the original design forming another accompaniment. 13.5” square (opened). This was sold with stock number 407-H.

- Designs are said to be symmetric if they exhibit specific kinds of balance, repetition and harmony. I find this design highly desirable because it encompasses all these elements. The visual rhythm is perfect and easy for our eyes to follow the repeating iconic imagery. The beverage cup’s large striking snaggle-toothed witch face design pulls the entire pattern together. The plate’s repeating imagery borders the cup’s upper and lower portion. The cup most likely was manufactured by the Dixie Cup Company of Easton, Pennsylvania and branded for Reed. The paper is thinly transparent and heavily coated with either paraffin or wax both inside and out. The narrow bottomed fluted style shape is atypical. I surmise this tall slender shaped cup was made to hold cocktails for adult themed Halloween parties.
- Coved luncheon plate, USA, C.A. Reed Company of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, 1938, made for one season only, 8″ square, no design named (early Reed output was not assigned a design/pattern). This was sold with stock number 25HP8 (HCS). This Reed paper party plate is perhaps the most endearing and coveted of all their designs. The whimsical pumpkin house themed artistry continues to be highly desirable among collectors.
